What the fee pays for
Bregana and Rupa are open toll points: the plaza is where you join and where you leave at once, and whoever passes it pays the same fixed amount, in either direction. There is no ticket.
- Bregana stands on the A3 about 400 m from the Slovenian border, before the Samobor exit, so a driver from Zagreb who leaves at Samobor never reaches it. Past the plaza the motorway into Zagreb and the Zagreb bypass are free. The ticketed A1 begins at Lučko, so a drive from Slovenia to Split pays the fee at Bregana and then €26.40 from Lučko.
- Rupa stands on the A7 about 3.5 km from the Slovenian border; its fee covers the stretch to the Jurdani junction. After it the road to the Učka junction at Matulji and the Rijeka bypass are free. For Istria you go on through the Učka tunnel, on Bina Istra's price list; for Zagreb you join the A6, where the toll starts at Grobnik.
Every journey from these two borders on this site includes the fee: Bregana to Split, Rupa to Pula.
The border
Croatia joined the Schengen area on 1 January 2023, so there is no passport check at either crossing. Slovenia carried out temporary checks on its border with Croatia from 21 October 2023, and ended them at midnight on 11 June 2026.
On the Slovenian side, the A2 motorway from Ljubljana leads to the crossing at Obrežje and Bregana; Rupa is reached from Ilirska Bistrica by the main road through Jelšane. Slovenian motorways need an e-vignette: see vignettes on the way.
For the Slovenian motorways: buy the e-vignette online at Vintrica. Partner link: if you buy through it we may earn a commission. You pay the same as buying from them directly.
From 1 March 2027
The plazas give way to gantries, as everywhere on Croatian motorways. HAC has not said yet how a passage will be charged under the new system. What is confirmed about Crolibertas.
