Tolls with a rental car

With a rental car you pay Croatian tolls exactly as with your own, and the amounts are the same. What changes on 1 March 2027 is who the toll is charged to, and that has not been settled yet.

Until 1 March 2027

Take a ticket where you join the motorway and pay where you leave it, in cash (euros) or by card. Nothing is tied to the car, so the rental company is not involved and there is nothing to arrange at the desk. Whether the car carries an ENC device is up to the rental company: ask at the desk. A rental car is category I like any other car; a rented van or camper higher than 1.90 m is category II.

From 1 March 2027

The booths give way to Crolibertas, which charges a registered number plate. For a rental car the plate belongs to the company, and how that will work has not been published: asked in September 2026, HAC said the rules for rented vehicles would be announced before the launch. Until then, the safe course is to ask the rental company, when you book, how tolls will be charged and whether it adds a handling fee. This page will say as soon as it is known.

What the Toll Collection Act does settle is who answers for an unpaid journey: the driver, and jointly the owner of the vehicle. The owner must name the driver when asked. So a drive in an unregistered rental car comes back to you through the rental company, as the toll plus the fixed charge of €120. Registering the car is the duty of the rental company, and passes to the driver where it has not been done: see registration.

What the usual drives cost

Split Airport is about half an hour from the A1 exit at Prgomet. From there, by car and one way: to Makarska, to Dubrovnik, to Zadar. From Zagreb: to Split, to the Plitvice Lakes, to Rovinj. Around Dubrovnik there is no motorway and nothing to pay.

Taking the car abroad

For Slovenia, Austria or Hungary you need that country's vignette, which rental cars from Croatia do not have. Tell the rental company before you cross a border: most ask for it and charge a cross-border fee. The road to Dubrovnik no longer crosses Bosnia and Herzegovina, thanks to the Pelješac bridge.

Driving through Slovenia, Hungary, Czechia or Slovakia? Buy the vignette online at Vintrica. Partner link: if you buy through it we may earn a commission. You pay the same as buying from them directly.

Fines and unpaid tolls

An unpaid toll or a fine reaches the rental company first, which passes it on to you with an administration fee of its own. Keep toll receipts until the deposit is back on your card.
