Vehicle categories

The toll depends on your vehicle. Height, weight, axles and whether you tow a trailer decide the category.

The cases people get wrong

What each category pays

Zagreb to Split, one way: €15.80 by motorcycle, €26.40 by car, €41.40 in category II, €55.20 in category III and €83.70 in category IV. The Učka tunnel: €4.10 by car, €6.20 in category II.

Campers and motorhomes

Up to 3,500 kg, a camper is category II if it is higher than 1.90 m, as nearly all are. Over 3,500 kg it is category III with two or three axles, and IV with four or more. A camper of category II towing a trailer, a car or a boat, is category III.

From 1 March 2027 a vehicle over 3,500 kg may use the motorway only with an ENC device, or the on-board unit of a European (EETS) toll service: registering the number plate is open only to vehicles up to 3,500 kg (Toll Collection Act, Article 16). A heavy motorhome that arrives without one must stop at the first sales office or partner point and have one fitted. How registration works.

On the way to Croatia the same motorhome needs, in Slovenia, the DarsGo unit for everything over 3.5 tonnes, and in Austria the GO-Box above 3.5 tonnes technically permissible mass. In Hungary, since 1 January 2026, motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes buy a D2 e-vignette instead of using HU-GO. Vignettes on the way.

Cars with caravans and trailers

A car or motorcycle towing anything is category II, whatever the trailer's height or number of axles. On the motorway it may tow one trailer only, and a braked caravan brings no lower speed limit; a combination longer than 7 m keeps to the two right-hand lanes where there are three. The rules of the road.

Motorcycles

Category IA covers motorcycles, motor tricycles and quads, at 60% of the car price. Motorcycles need dipped headlights all year, and in strong bura they are among the first stopped on the A1 and the A6: see when the wind closes the motorway.

Vans

A van up to 3,500 kg is category I if it is no higher than 1.90 m and category II if it is higher. A van of category II towing a trailer is category III.

The A2 counts differently

Autocesta Zagreb – Macelj, which runs the A2, words its categories in its own way, and measures height at the first axle. If you drive a tall van or tow on the A2, check AZM's categories.

Definitions follow the HAC price list and the toll rules behind it (Pravilnik o cestarini, Article 2.a), checked on 3 October 2026. Bina Istra uses the same wording on the Istrian Y. The Toll Collection Act lets the minister set new categories for 2027; none had been published by that date.
