Dubrovnik by car

The motorway stops at Karamatići, near Ploče, about 100 km short of Dubrovnik. The rest is ordinary road, free, over the Pelješac bridge. In the city, a zone watched by cameras now keeps visitors' cars away from the Old Town unless they have booked a parking place.

What the motorway costs to get there

By car, one way, the Croatian tolls only. Each journey opens with every vehicle's price and every exit on the way.

From HAC, the Croatian Automobile Club's route planner, the City of Dubrovnik and its parking company. Last checked on 3 October 2026.

The last 100 km

The A1 ends at the Karamatići junction. A car pays €33.70 to get there from Zagreb and €7.30 from Split. From there HAK's route planner gives 108 km and about 1 hour 40 minutes to the Pile gate, over the Pelješac bridge (2.4 km, opened in July 2022) and round Ston on its bypass (since April 2023). The official register of roads now counts this as the D8. Nothing on it is tolled.

A motorway to Dubrovnik is planned, not built: in June 2026 HAC began preparing the tender for its first two sections, near Slano.

Through Neum instead

The old coast road through Neum, 9.2 km across Bosnia and Herzegovina, is still open, and HAK times it a little longer: 1 hour 48 minutes to Pile, before any wait at the border. Its two crossings, Klek and Zaton Doli, are external borders of the Schengen area: everyone needs a passport or an identity card, and drivers from outside the EU go through two border checks, which since 12 October 2025 register them in the EU's Entry/Exit System. The Pelješac bridge avoids both.

The zone around the Old Town

Since 2 June 2025, and now every year from 1 March to 30 November, cameras watch a zone around the historic centre: from Ilijina glavica along Zagrebačka to Viktorija, and through Pile to Boninovo. A visitor's car may enter it only to reach a booked place in the Pile car park or on the lower level by the cable car; the booking registers the number plate. Any other car is fined €260. Campers and caravans may not enter at all while the zone is in force; motorcycles may. From December to February the zone is normally open to everyone.

If you are staying inside the zone where there is private parking, the owner can register your car: ask before you arrive.
