Good to know
Do I need a vignette in Croatia?
No. Croatia has no vignette. Motorways are tolled by distance. Until 1 March 2027 you take a ticket when you join and pay where you leave; from that date gantries record the journey and charge your registered number plate or ENC device.
Is the toll the same in both directions?
Yes. Zagreb to Split costs the same as Split to Zagreb, and the same holds for every pair of exits.
What does the motorway cost per kilometre?
It depends on the road. Zagreb to Split costs a car €26.40 for 378 km, about €6.98 per 100 km, and most of HAC's motorways are close to that. The A2 Zagreb – Macelj and the Istrian Y cost nearly twice as much: Zaprešić to Trakošćan is €6.70 for 49 km, about €13.81 per 100 km.
What does a camper or a car with a caravan pay?
Category II: a two-axle vehicle higher than 1.90 m and up to 3,500 kg, or any car towing a trailer or caravan. Zagreb to Split costs it €41.40 instead of the €26.40 a car pays. Over 3,500 kg a camper is category III.
Can I pay by card?
Yes. Until 1 March 2027 the booths take cash in euros and the usual cards. From that date there are no booths: you register your number plate with a bank card, or use an ENC device.
What changes on 1 March 2027?
The toll booths go. Gantries record where you join and leave, and the toll is charged to your registered number plate or ENC device. HAC has said the change brings no price increase. Register before you drive: a journey without registration costs the toll plus a fixed €120.
Is any motorway free?
The Zagreb and Rijeka bypasses are, and the A4 from Zagreb to Sveta Helena. So are the bridges to Krk and to Pelješac. The Učka tunnel is not: it is part of the Istrian Y and charged with it.
